Last time we see saw Bella Swan she was narrowly escaping the clutches of the evil vampire James while finding love with ”vegetarian” vampire Edward Cullen. Bella and Edward’s lives have been full of nothing but love and bliss however, it all changes one fateful day. On Bella’s birthday, her new found friend and sister of Edward, Alice, decides to throw her lavish party, complete with balloons, ribbons and cake that could feed an army. All is well until Bella accidentally cuts her finger whilst opening a present. The result is that Jasper Hale, the newest addition to the Cullen clan, succumbs to his blood lust and attacks Bella. Edward decides that while he and his family are around, Bella’s life will always be at risk. So he decides to leave her for her own good. Bella feels her life is over. Enter Jacob Black, a member of the Quilite tribe who manages to bring some joy and meaning back into Bella’s life. However as the two become closer, Bella discovers Jacob has a secret of his own- he’s a werewolf. As if that wasn’t bad enough Bella can’t seem to get the love of her life, Edward out of her mind. With new dangers, new friends and new enemies, Bella finds herself choosing between holding on to the past or accepting a new future. But what and more importantly who will she choose?
Bella (Kristen Stewart) is approaching her 18th birthday, she dreams of meeting her Grandmother in the Forest with Edward (Robert Pattinson), however she realises in the dream that it isn’t her Grandmother – but in fact herself as an old woman.
On the morning of her 18th Birthday her father Charlie (Billy Burke) gives her a camera and teases her about getting gray hair (which Bella reacts strongly to).
On arriving at school, Bella discovers that Alice (Ashley Greene) has arranged an 18th Birthday Party for her at the Cullen’s home, which she agrees to attend after Jasper (Jackson Rathbone) used his ability to influence her mood in a positive way.
At her birthday party, Bella notices a painting in the room of a group of individuals, one of whom appears to be Carlisle. Edward explains that they are the Volturi, the closet thing that the vampire world has to Royalty.
Bells is given a number of gifts from the Cullen family, Rosalie (Nikki Reed) gives a necklace she insists ‘Alice picked out’. Emmett (Kellan Lutz) gives her an empty box, which had contained a sound system for her truck – which he had already installed. When she receives the next gift, Bella accidentally cuts herself on the paper.
In an instant, Jasper launches into a blood frenzy, trying to attach Bella. Edward throws Bella across the room into a table to try and protect her. Carlisle (Peter Facinelli) and Emmett try to hold him back, with Edward becoming involved. They manage to stop Jasper, and Carlisle take Bells (who has a bad cut from glass) into his study to stitch the wound.
Whilst he works, Carlisle tells Bella the reason that Edward is against turning her into a vampire – explaining that Edward believes it will take away her soul. Bella notices a painting in the room of a group of individuals, one of whom appears to be Carlisle. He explains that they are the Volturi, the closet thing that the vampire world has to Royalty.
Edward collects Bella and takes her home.
The next day at school, none of the Cullen children attend. When Bella returns home, she sees Edward waiting outside of her house. He asks her to take a walk with him in the woods.
Edward tells Bella that the Cullen’s are moving away, and that he never wants to see her again, asking her to promise not to do anything silly. Bells asks Edward not to go, but he does – after kissing her once on the forehead. She tries running after him to find him, but cannot. She falls to the ground in despair.
Charlie and a number of his colleagues and friends are looking for Bella, however she is discovered in the woods by Sam Uley (Chaske Spencer), who returns her to Charlie – under the watchful eye of Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).
Months pass, October, November, December, January, February – as Bella sits in her room in a deep depression, which also manifests itself with horrific nightmares, which continually wake Charlie up.
One morning, before school – Charlie tells Bella that she should move back with her mother, as this has gone on ‘long enough’. Bella tells Charlie that she is going on a girls shopping trip with Jessica (Anna Kendrick), which she hastily arranges after the conversation has finished.
Whilst out with Jessica, she is shouted at by a gang of men on motorcycles, when she approaches them, she sees a vision of Edward telling her not to go. She does anyway, climbing on the back of one of their bikes. As they drive along, numerous visions of Edward appear to her – until she screams for the bike to stop, at which point they disappear.
Bella then reconnects with Jacob, visiting him at his house. She has bought 2 motor-cycles from a junk yard and wants him to help her repair them, which he agrees to. They spend a long time fixing-up the bikes until they are ready to be used.
Whilst out one afternoon, Bella and Jacob drive near to a cliff – where she sees some of Jacobs friends playing near the edge. They then push one of the guys over, which horrifies Bella. Jacob explains that they are Cliff Jumping, however that things with Sams gang are strange, and Jacob doesn’t like the way that Sam looks at him.
Jacob and Bella decide to try the motorbikes out. When Bells starts hers, she sees a vision of Edward asking her what she is doing, which causes her to stall the bike. When she restarts it, she just takes off at speed – with visions of Edward appearing to her as she rides unsteadily along. Eventually she loses control of the bike, is flung off it into a rock – on which she cuts her head.
Bella, Edward and Jacob are taken into the Volturi council chamber to stand before the three leaders — Aro Michael Sheen, who appears to be the head governor of the vampire world; Caius Jamie Campbell Bower, and Marcus Christopher Heyerdahl. Aro is fascinated with Bella, having heard about her unique immunity to the mind-reading powers that all vampires possess. He politely asks for her hand so he can try to read her thoughts himself. Bella complies, and Aro finds he cannot read her mind. Intrigued further, he turns to a mysterious young vampire woman named Jane Dakota Fanning and asks her to try. Edward, appearing to know that Jane would be trouble for Bella, tries to stop her, but Jane incapacitates him with but a single glance and the spoken word, ‘pain.’ Seeing Edward writhing on the ground, Bella begs for them to stop. Aro indulges her and has Jane proceed. Jane tries to read Bella’s mind but also fails. Though appearing not to have any malice toward Bella, Aro agrees with Caius and Marcus in that she knows too much about the vampire world and therefore, she must be killed. Aro turns to one of his officers, Felix Daniel Cudmore, to kill Bella. Edward again intervenes and fights with Felix, but he is no match for Felix’s superior strength and savagery. Felix has Edward beaten and is about to snap his neck when Bella frantically screams for mercy, begging Aro to kill her instead of Edward. The vampire leader is completely fascinated at her act of self-sacrifice, considering that Edward is a vampire– a ’soulless monster,’ as Aro puts it. Bella defiantly tells Aro that he does not understand a thing about a soul. Though he concedes Bella’s point, Aro is angered at her stand and moves in to bite her and feast on her, when Alice announces she’s seen a vision of Bella as one of the Cullen clan. She offers her hand to Aro so he can see the vision for himself. Alice promises to personally change Bella to a vampire. Appearing somewhat appeased by the vision, Aro agrees to let Bella go, although Caius warns they must change Bella to a vampire soon, as they will not get a second chance. As Bella, Edward and Alice are escorted out, they pass by a line of tourists being unsuspectingly led to a mass slaughter (unsuspectingly until their screams are heard).
Bella suddenly awakens in her room with Edward watching her. Edward tells Bella that he left because he was trying to protect her, and that it was the only way she could have a normal, happy life. But he sees now that he was wrong and promises never to fail her again. Edward suddenly announces that Charlie is approaching and is nowhere to be seen when Charlie looks in on Bella. Charlie reprimands her for how she scared him by disappearing, and that she’s ‘grounded for the rest of her life,’ to which Bella merely says, ‘okay.’ After Charlie leaves, Edward comes out of hiding and says he knows Charlie will never forgive him, and he just hopes Bella will. Bella shows him by kissing him, and says he’ll never get rid of her once Alice changes her. Again Edward shows his reluctance, saying there are ways to keep the Volturi in the dark. But Bella does not dare defy the Volturi council and brings Edward to the Cullen home, where she formally states her request to be changed, and asks the Cullen family to vote. All of the Cullens are happy to agree to Bella’s request except for Rosalie, who regretfully states she wouldn’t have chosen the life of a vampire for herself, and wishes someone would have been there to ‘vote no’ for her. Edward finally turns to Carlisle, who states he has no choice because Edward feels he cannot live without Bella, and Carlisle doesn’t want to lose his son.
Edward is driving Bella home, and she states she’ll wait until graduation for Charlie’s sake. She wants Edward to be the one to change her. As they round a turn in the road they find Jacob standing there waiting for them. Jacob quickly turns and trots off the road into the woods. Edward and Bella follow him on foot. Edward thanks Jacob for keeping Bella alive. He knows Jacob wants to keep him and Bella apart, and reminds him that Bella wants Edward as much as he wants her. Jacob responds by saying he’s here to remind Edward about a key point in the treaty. He explains to Bella that the truce between the Quileute wolf tribe and the Cullen clan hinges on the Cullens maintaining their ‘vegetarian’ diet of only drinking animal blood. The Quileute tribe’s mission is to protect humans from vampires, and if any of the Cullens were to bite a human, the truce is considered broken and the wolf tribe will go to war again. This is true even if Bella chose to voluntarily undergo the change to a vampire, and Jacob would be forced to stand by as his tribe considered her one of the enemy. Bella tries to reason with Jacob, telling him that she loves him, but she would always choose Edward over him. Jacob is visibly hurt on hearing this. Edward starts to turn Bella away from Jacob, which angers him. He pushes Edward, and Edward pushes back– hard. Jacob is in wolf form before he touches ground and rushes at Edward, who stands his ground until Bella runs between them, warning them both that they cannot hurt each other without hurting her. Despite his anger, Jacob backs away and runs into the woods for Bella’s sake. Edward uses this as more ammo in his attempts to keep Bella from becoming a vampire. But Bella still doesn’t back down. Five years is too long, she doesn’t respond when he asks, “Three?” Finally he smiles in amusement at her stubbornness and finally says he will change her if she agrees to one condition. He stares at her for a few seconds and then asks her to marry him. The screen freezes on Bella’s shocked expression before fading to black.
